National Assisted Living Week DePaul Homemade Happiness

Since 1984, DePaul has provided the highest quality care to senior citizens. By offering the comforts of home and personal care services to our seniors, we strive to enhance their independence and quality of life. Our homes are happy ones!

This week, September 8-14, 2013, marks National Assisted Living Week (NALW), and we celebrate with the theme of “Homemade Happiness.” It’s a “time to recognize the efforts,” great and small, “of every individual in a community that turn a residence into home for countless assisted living residents,” according to the National Center for Assisted Living.

Indeed; at DePaul, it is our dedicated and spirited staff and volunteers who make each senior living community a home where people thrive and are happy!

Perhaps one of the most treasured “homemade” activities is reminiscing.

Breadtime Stories Woodcrest Commons DePaul Senior LivingDuring “Bread Man” Chet Fery’s visit to seniors at Woodcrest Commons in Henrietta, NY, he asked some of the residents their memories and stories associated with bread. According to Activities Director Linsday Lown, one resident said that without fail, her mother would wake up at 4:00 a.m. before she went to work to make bread. The same resident recounted teaching her granddaughter to make different recipes. Another resident recollected spending Saturday nights making challah with his grandmother.

Sports are also tied to many memories for our seniors. Lisa Rich, Activities Director at Dayspring of Wallace in Wallace, North Carolina, encouraged residents to share their fondest summer memories with a baseball game on the Fourth of July!

“After chatting with a few of our residents, they talked about as kids always having a baseball game on the Fourth of July,” said Lisa. Residents and staff had a ‘ball’!

Indeed; it’s the daily activities, events and outings offered each day that often make the difference in the lives of our senior residents and their families:

  1. Thanks to all the senior living centers that focus on the great care to our loved ones. When mom went to live at the assisted living living mesa az we knew she would really be able to enjoy her “Golden Years” . Having these places are giving our elderly “independence” with “security”.
